Guide
ChatGPT Study Mode
A plain-English guide to ChatGPT Study Mode: what it is and how it works, how to turn it on, what it costs, how it works on teen accounts, what the learning research says about tutor-style AI, and how to get the most out of a session.
Quick answer: ChatGPT Study Mode is a free learning setting inside ChatGPT that makes the assistant act as a tutor: it asks about your goal and level, gives hints and guiding questions instead of finished answers, and checks your understanding with quizzes as you go. OpenAI launched it on 29 July 2025. It runs on custom system instructions rather than a separate model, so it works with every ChatGPT model on every plan, including Free (OpenAI, OpenAI Help Center). To turn it on, type @study in a new chat, select + and search “study”, or go to chatgpt.com/studymode.
This guide explains one feature: what Study Mode does and how to use it well. For the decision about which AI tool a student should use, see best AI for students, best AI for college students and best AI tutors. For maths and homework specifically, see best AI for homework.
What ChatGPT Study Mode is
ChatGPT Study Mode is a mode you switch on inside an ordinary ChatGPT conversation, not a separate app or subscription.
Study Mode is a set of instructions, not a new model. OpenAI states that Study Mode is “powered by custom system instructions” written with teachers, scientists and pedagogy experts (OpenAI). The model answering you is the same model you would get with Study Mode off; only the instructions telling it how to behave are different.
The instructions centre on not doing the work for you. Developer Simon Willison published what he reported as the Study Mode system prompt on launch day (Simon Willison). Its core rule is “DO NOT DO THE USER’S WORK FOR THEM”, and it tells the model to ask about the learner’s goals and level, to default to a 10th-grade explanation if the learner does not say, to check understanding after hard parts, and to keep replies short with “a good back-and-forth”.
OpenAI built five behaviours into Study Mode (OpenAI):
| Behaviour | What it does in a session |
|---|---|
| Interactive prompts | Socratic questions, hints and self-reflection prompts instead of a finished answer |
| Scaffolded responses | Explanations broken into organised sections that connect one idea to the next |
| Personalised support | Pitches the level using questions about your skill level and, if enabled, memory of past chats |
| Knowledge checks | Quizzes and open-ended questions with feedback on your answers |
| Flexibility | Can be switched on or off part-way through a conversation |
Behaviour can vary between conversations. Because Study Mode runs on instructions, OpenAI’s launch post says responses can vary from one conversation to the next, and that OpenAI plans to train the tutoring behaviour directly into its main models (OpenAI). OpenAI’s help page also asks users to verify important information, as with any ChatGPT answer (OpenAI Help Center).
How to turn on Study Mode in ChatGPT
| Where you are | How to start Study Mode |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT on the web | Type @study at the start of a message, or select +, type “study” and choose Study |
| Direct link | Go to chatgpt.com/studymode |
| iPhone and Android apps | Select + and choose Study, or search for it in the menu |
Source: OpenAI Help Center.
If you cannot see it in the menu, type @study. The labelled entry does not appear in the + tools menu on every account, and OpenAI’s help page points users to the @study shortcut, the menu search or the direct link instead.
Study Mode works in the main ChatGPT chat. OpenAI’s help page says it is designed for main ChatGPT conversations, not custom GPTs or Projects. If you keep your course material in a ChatGPT Project, start a normal chat and upload the files there. In some ChatGPT Edu workspaces, an administrator can turn Study Mode on for every regular conversation, in which case it applies automatically and the selector does not appear.
Turning it off is one action. Remove the @study prefix, or switch it off from the same menu, and ChatGPT returns to normal answers.
What ChatGPT Study Mode costs
Study Mode is included on every personal ChatGPT plan at no extra cost.
| Plan | Price (US) | Study Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Included |
| Go | $8/month | Included |
| Plus | $20/month | Included |
| Pro | $100, $200 or $500/month | Included |

Study Mode uses the same limits as any other chat. OpenAI states that Study Mode follows the same plan, model, message and rate-limit rules as regular chats and “doesn’t add messages or bypass limits” (OpenAI Help Center).
The plan changes the model, not the mode. Study Mode’s instructions are the same on every plan; a paid plan changes which models and limits sit underneath them. For the full plan breakdown, see our ChatGPT guide.
What a Study Mode session looks like
A typical Study Mode session follows the same arc whatever the subject.
- It asks before it answers. Ask about the Pythagorean theorem and Study Mode first asks what level you are at and what you are trying to do: a test, a homework problem or general understanding.
- It explains in small pieces. It delivers one step, then asks you a question about that step before moving on.
- It corrects your attempts. Give a wrong answer and it walks back through where the reasoning went wrong. Edutopia’s tester deliberately wrote 0.000084 as 8.4 × 10⁻⁷, and Study Mode caught the error and corrected it step by step (Edutopia).
- It quizzes you. It generates multiple-choice questions, open questions and flashcard-style prompts, including from notes or slides you upload.
- It remembers, if memory is on. With memory enabled, Study Mode may use saved memories and past chats to pitch its level, and you can review them under Settings > Personalization > Memory (OpenAI Help Center).
Interactive maths and science visuals sit alongside it. ChatGPT can show interactive visual explanations for more than 70 maths and science topics, such as Ohm’s law, compound interest and Charles’ law, where you change a variable and watch the result update. They are available to anyone signed in, in normal chats as well as Study Mode, and OpenAI said more than 140 million people use ChatGPT each week for help with maths and science (TechCrunch).
Study Mode on teen accounts
ChatGPT for Teens puts Study Mode at the centre of the teen experience. Users who state an age of 13 to 17, or whom OpenAI’s age-prediction system estimates to be under 18, are placed in a teen version of ChatGPT on Free and paid personal plans, with no new account required (OpenAI, OpenAI Help Center). Three study features come with it:
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Homework reminders | Suggest switching to Study Mode when a teen appears to be asking ChatGPT to complete an assignment |
| Study Hours | Let a linked parent schedule times when new chats in the main ChatGPT experience start in Study Mode |
| Study Mode default (parental control) | Lets a linked parent make every new chat in the main ChatGPT experience start in Study Mode; off by default |
Sources: OpenAI, OpenAI Help Center on parental controls.
Study Mode settings set how chats start; Quiet Hours limits access. OpenAI’s parental controls page says the Study Mode setting “controls how eligible new conversations start”, that “Study hours do not block access to ChatGPT”, and that neither applies to GPT or Project conversations (OpenAI Help Center). Parents who want to set times when a teen cannot use ChatGPT use the separate Quiet Hours control. Both are managed under Settings > Parental controls, and a teen cannot change settings a linked parent manages.
What the research says about tutor-style AI
Study Mode’s design follows the approach that has done best in controlled trials of AI help for students: hints and guiding questions rather than answers on request.
Hint-based AI tutoring protects exam performance. In a randomised trial in Turkish high-school maths classes published in PNAS, Hamsa Bastani and colleagues found that students given an unrestricted GPT-4 tool scored 48% higher on practice problems but 17% lower than the control group on an unaided exam, while a version that gave hints instead of answers raised practice scores by 127% and left exam scores level with the control group (Wharton). Study Mode is a hint-first design of that second kind.
Students tend to overrate what they learned with AI. The same trial found that students using AI were overly optimistic about their own learning. An unaided test afterwards is the reliable check. We cover the tutoring trials in more depth in best AI tutors.
ChatGPT Study Mode, Claude Learning Mode and Gemini Guided Learning
The three major chat assistants each offer a free learning mode built on the same Socratic idea.
| ChatGPT Study Mode | Claude Learning Mode | Gemini Guided Learning | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How to start | @study, + then “study”, or chatgpt.com/studymode | ”Learning” option in the style menu | + then More tools, then Guided Learning |
| Price | Free on all plans | Free on all plans | Free when signed in |
| Teen and parental study controls | Study Hours and a parent-set Study Mode default | No | No |
Sources: OpenAI Help Center, Engadget on Claude, Google Gemini Help.
Which of the three a student should pick depends on their subjects, school accounts and what else they need; that decision is covered on best AI for students and best AI tutors.
How to get the most from ChatGPT Study Mode
Tell it your level, your goal and your deadline in the first message. Study Mode defaults to a 10th-grade explanation when you do not say. “I am a first-year nursing student with a pharmacology exam on Friday and I keep confusing agonists and antagonists” gets a far better session than “explain agonists”.
Answer its questions before asking for more. The mode is built around back-and-forth, and the PNAS trial is the evidence that working through hints beats being handed answers.
Set the pace. Edutopia’s tester got better results after asking Study Mode to slow down (Edutopia). “One step at a time, and wait for my answer” is a useful standing instruction.
Upload your own material. Quizzing from your lecture notes, slides or a photo of handwritten notes keeps the session on what you will be examined on and on the methods your course uses. For revision cards with spaced repetition, see AI flashcard generators.
Test yourself without it afterwards. Close the chat and answer a fresh question unaided.
Check facts that carry marks. Check formulas, dates and definitions against your textbook or lecture notes, as OpenAI’s own help page advises for important information.
For essays, use it to think. Ask it to question your thesis, find holes in your argument or explain a source, and write the paragraphs yourself. For tools built around essay feedback, see best AI for essays.
For parents and teachers
Parents: Study Hours and the Study Mode default set how new chats start. A linked parent can make new chats open in Study Mode during set times or all the time, and the Quiet Hours control limits access to ChatGPT altogether. Talking with a teen about how they use it does more than either setting.
Teachers: students control the mode. OpenAI’s vice president of education, Leah Belsky, told TechCrunch at launch that Study Mode is not something students are locked into (TechCrunch). Recommending it for revision and practice sits comfortably alongside assessment design, in-class work and draft history.
Teachers: a Study Mode transcript is useful process evidence. A student who can show a Study Mode conversation where they attempted problems, got corrected and tried again is showing their learning, which is stronger evidence than a detector score. See our Turnitin AI detection guide.
Institutions: the education plugins are a separate product. OpenAI’s College Student, College Educator and K–12 Educator plugins offer a guided tutor, study guides, quizzes and flashcards built from course material, and are available in ChatGPT Edu and ChatGPT for Teachers district deployments (OpenAI).
Frequently asked questions
What is ChatGPT study mode?
ChatGPT Study Mode is a free setting in ChatGPT that makes the assistant behave like a tutor, asking about your goal and level, giving hints and guiding questions instead of finished answers, and checking your understanding with quizzes. OpenAI launched it on 29 July 2025. It runs on custom system instructions written with teachers, scientists and pedagogy experts, so it uses the same ChatGPT models as a normal chat.
Is ChatGPT study mode free?
Yes. ChatGPT Study Mode is included on the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans at no extra cost. It uses the same message and rate limits as regular chats on each plan, and paid plans change the underlying models rather than Study Mode itself.
How do I turn on study mode in ChatGPT?
On the web, type @study at the start of a new message, or select the + button, type “study” and choose Study. You can also go straight to chatgpt.com/studymode. On the iPhone and Android apps, select + and choose Study, or search for it in the menu. Study Mode works in main ChatGPT conversations rather than custom GPTs or Projects.
Did ChatGPT remove study mode?
No. ChatGPT Study Mode is still listed in OpenAI’s Help Center. If the labelled entry does not appear in your + menu, start it by typing @study, by searching “study” after selecting +, or by going to chatgpt.com/studymode.
Can ChatGPT study mode do my homework?
It is designed to help you do your homework rather than do it for you: its instructions tell ChatGPT not to do the user’s work, so it gives hints, asks guiding questions and checks your answers. A randomised trial of a similar hint-based GPT-4 tutor found students kept their unaided exam scores, while students given answers on demand scored 17% lower.
Can parents set ChatGPT to study mode?
Yes. A linked parent can set Study Hours, when new chats start in Study Mode, or make every eligible new chat start in Study Mode. These settings control how chats start; to limit access to ChatGPT at set times, parents use the separate Quiet Hours control.
Is ChatGPT study mode good?
Study Mode follows the hint-first approach that performed best in a randomised trial of AI help in high-school maths, where a hint-based GPT-4 tutor raised practice scores by 127% without lowering exam scores. Edutopia’s hands-on test found it caught deliberate mistakes and corrected them step by step, and that it worked better when asked to slow down.
Is using AI for studying cheating?
Using AI to understand material, practise problems and check your own reasoning is not cheating at most institutions; submitting AI-written work as your own usually is. The line is set by your school or course policy, and many institutions ask you to disclose AI use. Keeping your Study Mode conversations is useful evidence of your own process if your work is ever questioned.
What is the difference between ChatGPT study mode and Gemini guided learning?
Both are free tutoring modes that use questions and hints instead of handing over answers. ChatGPT Study Mode is started with @study and comes with teen controls such as Study Hours; Gemini Guided Learning is started from More tools in the Gemini app. Claude offers a third option, Learning Mode, chosen from Claude’s style menu.
Does ChatGPT study mode use a different model?
No. ChatGPT Study Mode is powered by custom system instructions, not a separate model, and works with all ChatGPT models. The model answering you depends on your plan and model choice, exactly as in a normal chat. OpenAI has said it plans to train tutoring behaviour directly into its main models.
