Comparison
Claude Pro vs Max
How Claude's Pro, Max and Ultra plans compare on price, five-hour and weekly usage limits, Fable access, Claude Code and API credits, and which one fits how much you use Claude.
Quick answer: Claude Pro ($20 a month) is the right plan for most people, because it already includes Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Code and the same app features as Max. Max ($100 a month) gives five times Pro’s usage in every five-hour window and every week, plus Claude Fable 5.1 inside your limits and $100 a month of API credit; it is the upgrade for people who hit Pro’s limit most days. Ultra ($200 a month) is the old Max 20x plan, renamed on 30 October 2026: ten times Pro’s weekly usage, no five-hour limit once your account is verified, and $200 of monthly API credit, so it suits developers running Claude Code all day.

Prices, limits and plan features are from Anthropic’s pricing page and its Ultra plan help page. Anthropic does not publish usage as a message or token count on any plan.
Max 5x and Max 20x are now Max and Ultra
Anthropic renamed its two Max plans on 30 October 2026: Max 5x became Max and Max 20x became Ultra, at the same $100 and $200 prices. Anthropic says existing Max 20x subscribers moved to Ultra automatically, with no price change (Anthropic). So anyone searching “Claude Pro vs Max” is now choosing between three paid personal plans, not two.
The old Max 20x plan was marketed as 20 times Pro’s usage per session (Decrypt). Ultra’s help page instead states the weekly allowance, 10 times Pro’s, and The Next Web reported that weekly limits stayed the same with the rename (Anthropic; The Next Web). What did change on Ultra is that the five-hour limit comes off for verified accounts. Max still has a five-hour limit, set at five times Pro’s.
What each plan costs
Pro is $20 a month, or $200 paid annually, which works out at about $17 a month. Max is $100 a month and Ultra is $200 a month; both are billed monthly only, with no annual option (Anthropic).
Measured by weekly allowance, every plan costs the same per unit: Max is five times Pro’s monthly price for five times its weekly usage, and Ultra ten times the price for ten times the usage. The extra money buys headroom in the five-hour window (Max), the removal of that window (Ultra), Fable inside your limits and monthly API credit, not cheaper usage.
Usage limits: the five-hour window and the weekly cap
Every Claude plan meters usage in two layers: a rolling five-hour session limit and a weekly limit across all models. Chat, agent work, Claude Code and the IDE extensions all draw on the same pool (Danilchenko).
- Pro has both limits at 1x. Anthropic publishes no message count, and long files and Claude Code sessions use the allowance faster than short chats.
- Max gives five times Pro’s usage every five hours and every week (Anthropic).
- Ultra gives ten times Pro’s usage every week and has no five-hour limit for verified accounts. Anthropic verifies Ultra accounts automatically from factors such as account and payment history; until then a temporary five-hour limit applies, and verifying a phone number at checkout does not remove it. If Settings > Usage shows no “Current session” bar, the account is verified. Ultra also has a separate weekly limit for Fable (Anthropic).
Limits have moved several times in 2026. In May, Anthropic doubled Claude Code’s five-hour limits, citing new computing capacity (The Next Web). When it launched Opus 5.5 on 22 September 2026, it raised five-hour limits on the Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans, without publishing a percentage (Anthropic).
Which models you get on each plan
Pro and Max get the same core models. Both include Claude Opus 5.5, Anthropic’s flagship since 22 September 2026, plus Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Haiku 5.5. Opus 5.5 is the default model in Claude Code on Pro, Max and Ultra, starting at medium effort, and needs Claude Code version 2.1.280 or later (Claude Code docs). Max does not add a better Opus.
Fable is the one model difference. Claude Fable 5.1, the Mythos-class model above Opus, is not included in Pro’s plan limits: Pro subscribers pay for it with usage credits (Anthropic), at API rates of $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, from the first prompt (Danilchenko). On Max and Ultra, Fable can use up to half of the weekly limit at no extra charge (Anthropic).
Claude Code on Pro vs Max
Claude Code, Anthropic’s agentic coding tool for the terminal, IDE, desktop and web, is included on every paid plan and not on Free (Anthropic). It shares the plan’s usage pool with chat, so a long coding session eats into the same five-hour and weekly allowance as everything else (Danilchenko).
That is why Claude Code is the usual reason people upgrade. A developer using Claude Code for an hour or two a day can run on Pro. A developer running it through most of the workday will hit Pro’s five-hour window and is the person Max is for. Someone running long agent sessions back to back, where the five-hour reset itself is the bottleneck, is the person Ultra is for. Monthly API credits on Max and Ultra
Since 7 October 2026, Max includes $100 and Ultra $200 of Claude API credit each month; Pro has none (Anthropic). Anthropic’s API credits help page sets the rules:
- New subscribers can claim the credit after seven days on an eligible plan, and it links to one Console organisation.
- It covers the Claude API, the Console Playground, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK.
- It does not cover interactive Claude Code (terminal, IDE, desktop or web), runs started by the Claude Code GitHub Action, or usage beyond your plan’s limits.
- Unused credit expires at the end of each billing cycle. When it runs out, API requests stop until the next month’s credit arrives, unless the Console organisation has bought its own credit; usage is never charged to the Claude plan.
For someone who already spends $100 a month on the API, Max ($100, with $100 of API credit) costs less than Pro plus that API bill ($120). For API pricing in general, see best LLM APIs.
Going past your limit: usage credits
Every paid plan can keep working after it hits a limit by buying usage credits (Anthropic), previously called extra usage, billed at standard API rates and separate from the Max and Ultra API credit. You can set a monthly spend cap or leave it unlimited, and turn on auto-reload (Danilchenko). Usage credits are the alternative to upgrading: staying on Pro and paying for the overflow costs less than Max as long as the overflow comes to less than $80 a month, the difference between the two plans.
Features that are the same on every paid plan
Most of the Claude app is identical on Pro, Max and Ultra. Claude Design, Docs and Slides, Research, memory, Projects (the Free plan is limited to five), connectors and Claude in Chrome are all on Pro (Anthropic), and so is the Claude Duet proactive agent app, a US waitlist preview since 21 October 2026 on Pro, Max and Ultra. The plans differ on usage, Fable access and API credit, not on features. The Claude app guide covers each feature in full, and the Team and Enterprise plans for organisations.
Pro vs Max: when to upgrade
Stay on Pro unless you hit the five-hour limit most days. Pro already has Opus 5.5, Claude Code and every app feature, so the upgrade buys usage, Fable and API credit.
Upgrade to Max when:
- you hit Pro’s five-hour limit on most working days, not once or twice a month;
- you use Claude Code through most of the workday;
- you want Fable 5.1 regularly without paying API rates for it; or
- you already spend on the Claude API and can use the $100 monthly credit.
If you run out only occasionally, buy usage credits on Pro instead.
Max vs Ultra: when $200 makes sense
Ultra is for people whose bottleneck is the five-hour reset. Ultra’s weekly allowance is twice Max’s for twice the price, so on weekly volume the two cost the same per unit. What Ultra adds is no five-hour cap once verified, which matters if you run long Claude Code or agent sessions back to back, and an extra $100 of API credit. If you rarely see the five-hour limit on Max but run out by the end of the week, Ultra’s doubled weekly allowance is the reason to move.
Claude plans vs ChatGPT plans
ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro both cost $20 a month, and ChatGPT Pro’s $100 and $200 tiers sit at the same prices as Claude Max and Ultra. ChatGPT also has an $8 Go tier and a $500 Pro tier, which Claude does not. For which assistant to pick in the first place, see ChatGPT vs Claude.
Which Claude plan should you choose?
- Best for most people: Pro ($20/month, or about $17/month paid annually). Opus 5.5, Claude Code and every app feature at the lowest paid price.
- Best for daily heavy use: Max ($100/month). Five times Pro’s usage per five-hour window and per week, Fable inside your limits and $100 of monthly API credit.
- Best for all-day Claude Code: Ultra ($200/month). Ten times Pro’s weekly usage, no five-hour cap once verified, and $200 of monthly API credit.
- Best if you only run out occasionally: Pro plus usage credits, paid at API rates as you go.
- Best for teams: Claude’s Team and Enterprise plans, covered in the Claude app guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Claude Pro and Max?
Claude Pro costs $20 a month and Claude Max costs $100 a month. Max gives five times Pro’s usage in every five-hour window and every week, includes Claude Fable 5.1 for up to half of the weekly limit, and adds $100 of monthly API credit. Both plans include Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Code and the same app features.
Is Claude Max worth it?
Claude Max is worth it if you hit Pro’s five-hour limit on most working days, usually because you use Claude Code for much of the day. If you run out only now and then, buying usage credits on Pro costs less as long as the overflow comes to under $80 a month, the difference between the plans. Max also suits people who want Fable 5.1 regularly or already pay for the Claude API.
What is Claude Ultra?
Claude Ultra is Anthropic’s $200-a-month plan, the old Max 20x plan renamed on 30 October 2026 at the same price. It gives ten times Pro’s weekly usage, removes the five-hour limit once your account is verified, includes Fable 5.1 for up to half of the weekly limit, and adds $200 of monthly API credit. Existing Max 20x subscribers moved to Ultra automatically.
Did Claude Max 20x get cut to 10x?
The two numbers measure different things. Max 20x was marketed as 20 times Pro’s usage per session, while Ultra’s help page states its weekly allowance, ten times Pro’s. The Next Web reported that weekly limits stayed the same when Max 20x became Ultra on 30 October 2026, and verified Ultra accounts no longer have a five-hour limit.
Does Claude Pro include Opus?
Yes. Claude Pro includes Claude Opus 5.5, Anthropic’s flagship model since 22 September 2026, and Opus 5.5 is the default model in Claude Code on Pro. Max and Ultra get the same model; they add usage, not a better Opus. The one model Pro does not include within its limits is Claude Fable 5.1, which Pro users pay for with usage credits.
Does Claude Pro include Claude Code?
Yes. Claude Code is included on Pro, Max and Ultra, and not on the Free plan. It draws on the same five-hour and weekly allowance as chat, so heavy Claude Code use is the most common reason Pro subscribers run out and move to Max.
How much usage do you get on Claude Pro?
Anthropic does not publish a message count for any plan. Pro has a rolling five-hour limit and a weekly limit, and long documents and Claude Code sessions use the allowance faster than short chats. Max gives five times Pro’s usage per five-hour window and per week, and Ultra ten times Pro’s weekly usage.
Can you pay for Claude Max annually?
No. Claude Max and Claude Ultra are billed monthly only. Claude Pro is the only personal plan with annual billing, at $200 a year, which works out at about $17 a month.
What happens when you hit your Claude usage limit?
Claude stops responding on that plan until the five-hour window or the weekly limit resets. On any paid plan you can turn on usage credits to keep going, billed at standard API rates, with an optional monthly spend cap and auto-reload. The alternative is upgrading to a higher plan.
