Best AI 3D Model Generators

Tripo, Meshy, Hi3D (formerly Hitem3D), Tencent Hunyuan3D and Hyper3D Rodin ranked on blind-vote arena results, hands-on 3D printing tests, user ratings, prices and free tiers, with the open models you can run yourself and what the general chatbots cannot do in 3D.

Updated October 2026

Quick answer: The best AI 3D model generator for most people is Tripo, because Tripo’s models won all five boards of the September 2026 season on the Top 3D AI blind-vote arena (16,503 votes across 21 tools), including textured models and raw geometry, and its Pro plan costs $20 a month for 3,000 credits. For 3D printing and a full pipeline in one tool, Meshy is the better choice, because it has the most independent hands-on print tests of any generator here, its own print-repair, rigging and animation tools, and a 4.7 rating from about 3,800 Trustpilot reviews. For the best free option, Tencent Hunyuan3D gives 20 free generations a day on Tencent’s hosted site. The one caveat: when 3Dnatives tested nine Meshy models for printing, seven came out as several separate bodies and the generator invented the sides the photo did not show, so plan to inspect and repair a model before you print it or put it in a game.

This page ranks tools that turn a text prompt or a photo into a 3D model file (such as GLB, FBX, OBJ or STL) that you can open in Blender, a game engine or a 3D printer slicer. That is a different output from the pages next to it:

What the evidence says about AI 3D generators

One independent arena covers the category. On the Top 3D AI arena, voters compare two models head to head and pick the better one, and ratings reset each month. The season that ran from 1 September to 1 October 2026 took 16,503 votes across 21 tools in five boards:

BoardVotesFirstSecondThird

Smart UV98Tripo Smart UV (1,029)Hunyuan Semantic UV (971)Two entrants only

Tripo v3.1 won 84.7% of its geometry match-ups and 66.3% of its textured ones. Hi3D v3.0 was fourth on the textured board at 1,053. The site says Tripo has won the season seven times in a row.

The leaders are close on the live board. On 13 October 2026 the live October board had Meshy 7 first at 1,096, Tripo v3.1 second at 1,094 and Hi3D v3.0 third at 1,079, each on a few hundred votes, with Hunyuan 3D v3.1 sixth, Rodin Gen 2.5 seventh, Microsoft’s TRELLIS.2 twentieth and Meta’s SAM 3D last of 21. A board that young moves daily, so this page ranks on the completed September season.

Arena votes reward looks more than usability. The Hugging Face 3D Arena paper (Dylan Ebert, June 2025), built on 123,243 votes from 8,096 users, found that textured models scored on average 144.1 Elo higher than untextured ones. A model that wins a blind vote can still have a mesh that a game engine or a printer struggles with, which is why this page weighs hands-on tests alongside arena results.

Hands-on print tests find repair work. 3Dnatives Lab tested Meshy 7.1 for printing on 23 September 2026 with nine photos. None of the nine models had holes, but seven of the nine were made of several separate bodies, up to 51 in one file, some files had up to 99 non-manifold edges, and Bambu Studio flagged nothing to repair. The largest file reached 2.97 million triangles and 36 MB, small lettering became unreadable, and the generator invented parts the photo did not show.

No general chatbot exports a 3D file. ChatGPT outputs text, images, voice, code and video, not meshes; it can write a Blender Python script that builds a simple shape, which is a different and much more limited job. The “3D models” Google added to the Gemini app are interactive simulations shown inside the chat.

How we judged these tools

A tool is ranked here on independent evidence: results in a blind-vote arena, hands-on tests by publishers that do not sell a 3D generator, and user ratings with real volume behind them. Vendor benchmarks and vendor-run leaderboards are not counted. Tripo, Meshy and Hi3D have all three kinds of evidence. Tencent Hunyuan3D and Hyper3D Rodin are ranked on arena results alone, which is why they sit fourth and fifth. The full method is on how we rank.

Top 3D AI is the main arena source. Its founder, Stefan Vaskevich, states that it has “no vendor bias, no paid rankings”. The site carries an “Advertise” link and publishes no sponsor or affiliate disclosure.

The hands-on evidence comes from 3D printing publishers: 3Dnatives, 3DPrint.com and All3DP. 3DPrint.com’s reviewer says Meshy granted her an extra 1,000 credits for its test; 3Dnatives says it used a Pro plan.

The best AI 3D model generators, reviewed

1. Tripo — best AI 3D model generator overall

Made by: VAST Arena models: Tripo v3.1, the P-series low-poly models, Tripo Segmentation and Tripo Smart UV Price: Free (200 credits a month); Pro $20/month or $240/year (3,000 credits)

Tripo is the best general-purpose AI 3D generator because its models won every board of the September 2026 Top 3D AI season: textured models at 1,094, geometry at 1,146 with an 84.7% win rate, plus low poly, segmentation and smart UV. Tripo has 4.5 from about 620 reviews on Trustpilot, on a profile where Tripo does not invite reviews; 83% are five-star and 9% one-star.

What it does. Tripo makes textured models from a prompt or photos, and its arena entries cover the steps after generation: splitting a model into parts, retopology, low-poly output and UV unwrapping.

What independent testers found. All3DP picked Tripo for editing and concept work in its June 2026 hands-on roundup.

Watch out for: Free-plan models are public and for non-commercial use; the Pro plan gives private models and commercial rights. The one-star Trustpilot reviews mostly concern billing: charges after cancelling, refused refunds and a free plan that reviewers say needs payment to download.

Why it wins over Meshy. The two are close, and Meshy 7 led the young October board by two points on 13 October. Tripo leads on the completed blind-vote season across every board, and its $20 Pro plan includes three times the monthly credits of Meshy’s $20 Pro plan, although the two price a generation differently. Meshy has more hands-on print tests and more user ratings, which is why it is the pick for printing.

2. Meshy — best for 3D printing and an all-in-one pipeline

Made by: Meshy Arena models: Meshy 7.1, Meshy 7, Meshy 6 Price: Free (100 credits a month); Pro $20/month (1,000 credits) Exports: GLB, FBX, OBJ, STL, USDZ, BLEND

Meshy is the best choice if you are going to 3D print the model or need rigging and animation without leaving the tool, because it has the most independent hands-on print tests of any generator here. It also has the largest body of user ratings in the category: 4.7 from about 3,800 reviews on Trustpilot, where Meshy invites reviews.

What it does. Meshy generates models from text or images, and its API changelog lists rigging and animation, remeshing, retexturing, multi-colour print export, and printability analysis and repair.

What independent testers found. The 3Dnatives Lab test of Meshy 7.1 (23 September 2026) found no holes in nine models but separate bodies in seven of them, buttresses “thinner than any FDM nozzle can produce”, unreadable small lettering and invented detail on unseen sides. It concluded that “for the objects its printing tools target, Meshy does what it says”, but that its models are “designed to look right on screen rather than to match a real object”. 3DPrint.com’s Meshy 7 test (11 September 2026) found a hallucinated dog leash, a misspelled word and faces that “will require touchup”. All3DP’s June 2026 roundup picked Meshy for decorative and multicolour prints.

Watch out for: Free-plan models carry a CC BY 4.0 licence, which allows commercial use only with credit to Meshy; Pro gives private ownership. Every 3MF file Meshy exports with default settings is 50 mm tall, 3Dnatives found, so set the size yourself. Trustpilot reviewers complain of credits lost on failed generations and of a paywall before download.

3. Hi3D — best for untextured geometry

Current model: Hi3D v3.0 (formerly Hitem3D) Price: Free tier; paid plan prices: data not available

Hi3D, formerly Hitem3D, is the pick when the shape matters more than the texture, because Hi3D v3.0 placed second on the geometry board of the September 2026 Top 3D AI season at 1,127, ahead of Meshy 7, and fourth on the textured board. All3DP picked it for printability in its June 2026 hands-on roundup and measured about 25 minutes per generation.

User ratings. Hi3D has 4.2 from 94 reviews on Trustpilot, 13% of them one-star. Reviewers complain that subscriptions are yearly only and that credits cannot be bought singly to try the tool.

Watch out for: We could not confirm Hi3D’s current prices, and its user record is small.

4. Tencent Hunyuan3D — best free AI 3D model generator

Made by: Tencent Arena models: Hunyuan 3D v3.1, Part Splitter and Semantic UV Price: 20 free generations a day on the hosted site; API on Tencent Cloud, with 200 free credits

Tencent Hunyuan3D is the best free option, because Tencent’s global launch on 26 November 2025 gave every user 20 free generations a day, with text, image (up to four views) and sketch input, and Smart Topology to tidy the mesh.

Independent evidence. Hunyuan’s part splitter and UV tools each placed second to Tripo’s in the September 2026 arena season, and Hunyuan 3D v3.1 was sixth on the live October board on 13 October. We found no hands-on test from an independent publisher and no user ratings with volume.

Open weights. Tencent published Hunyuan3D 2.1 as open weights in June 2025. The licence does not apply in the European Union, the United Kingdom or South Korea, and products with more than 1 million monthly active users need a separate licence from Tencent.

5. Hyper3D Rodin — best for detailed textured models

Made by: Deemos Arena model: Rodin Gen 2.5 Price: Free (10 private assets); Creator $30/month or $24/month billed annually (about 60 models); Business $120/month or $96/month billed annually (about 416 models, with API access)

Hyper3D Rodin is the pick for detailed textured models, because Rodin Gen 2.5 placed second on the textured board of the September 2026 Top 3D AI season at 1,066, ahead of Meshy 7.1. High-poly quad output is part of the Business plan.

The evidence is thinner than for the top three. We found no independent hands-on test and no user ratings with volume.

Watch out for: It is the most expensive entry plan here at $30 a month, and API access needs the $120 Business plan. The monthly model counts are Deemos’s estimates.

Best AI 3D model generator for each job

Best free AI 3D model generator

Tencent Hunyuan3D is the best free AI 3D generator because it gives 20 generations a day with no subscription, against 200 credits a month on Tripo’s free plan and 100 credits a month on Meshy’s.

Best AI 3D model generator for 3D printing

Meshy is the best choice for 3D printing because it lists printability analysis and repair and multi-colour print export, and it is the generator independent print publishers have tested most. If the solidity of the shape matters more than speed, Hi3D is All3DP’s pick for printability.

Best AI 3D model generator for game assets

Tripo is the best choice for game assets because it won the September 2026 arena boards for geometry, low poly, segmentation and UV unwrapping.

Best AI 3D model generator from a photo

Tripo is the best choice for turning a photo into a model because Tripo v3.1 led both the textured and geometry boards in September 2026. Every generator has to guess the sides a single photo does not show, so give it several views where the tool allows it.

Best AI 3D model generator for rigged, animated characters

Meshy is the best choice when you need a rigged, animated character from the same tool; Meshy’s credit table says rigging and animation cost no credits. For a VTuber or app avatar, see best AI avatar generators.

Best open model to run on your own computer

Microsoft’s TRELLIS.2 is released under the MIT licence, with no country restrictions, and needs an NVIDIA GPU with at least 24 GB of memory. It placed twentieth of 21 on the live Top 3D AI board on 13 October 2026, well behind the hosted leaders. Hunyuan3D 2.1 is the alternative, but its licence excludes the EU, the UK and South Korea.

Other AI 3D tools worth knowing (not ranked)

These tools are available today, but we did not find enough independent assessment to rank them.

Why AI 3D models still need clean-up

Separate bodies and non-manifold edges break prints. A non-manifold edge is one shared by more than two faces, or an edge on a surface with no thickness; a slicer can read it as a hole or an impossible wall. 3Dnatives found up to 99 such edges and up to 51 separate bodies in single Meshy 7.1 files, and its slicer flagged none of them.

Polycounts are far higher than a game needs. 3Dnatives measured files of up to 2.97 million triangles from Meshy 7.1. Real-time games need far fewer, so expect to use a tool’s retopology or low-poly mode, or remesh in Blender.

Unseen sides are invented. A single photo shows one side of an object. 3Dnatives found an invented buckle on a watch strap and a cathedral with its nave missing, and 3DPrint.com found a dog leash that was not in the photo.

Size is not real-world size. Every default 3MF export in the 3Dnatives test was 50 mm tall. Set dimensions in your slicer, and do not use AI output for parts that must fit something else.

Before you use a model:

  1. Start from a clean image of a single object on a plain background, and use several views where the tool accepts them.
  2. Check for non-manifold edges, separate bodies and thin walls in Blender’s 3D Print toolbox or your slicer’s repair tool, even if the slicer accepts the file.
  3. Set scale and orientation yourself.

Who owns an AI-generated 3D model?

The licence depends on your plan. Tripo’s free models are public and non-commercial, while Pro users get commercial rights. Meshy’s free models are licensed CC BY 4.0, which permits commercial use with credit to Meshy, and Pro users own their assets privately. Read the terms of the plan you generated on.

Copyright may not protect a purely AI-generated model. The US Copyright Office’s January 2025 report on copyrightability, summarised by Ballard Spahr, says prompts alone are not enough for copyright, but that human selection, arrangement and modification of AI output can be protected. This is not legal advice.

Game developers are sceptical. In the GDC 2026 State of the Game Industry survey (29 January 2026), 36% of respondents said they use generative AI at work and 52% said it is having a negative impact on the industry.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI 3D model generator?

Tripo is the best AI 3D model generator for most people, because Tripo’s models won all five boards of the September 2026 season on the Top 3D AI blind-vote arena, including textured models and geometry, and its Pro plan costs $20 a month for 3,000 credits. Meshy is the better choice for 3D printing and for rigging and animation in one tool, and Tencent Hunyuan3D is the best free option at 20 generations a day.

What is the best free AI 3D model generator?

Tencent Hunyuan3D is the best free AI 3D model generator, with 20 free generations a day on Tencent’s hosted site since its global launch in November 2025. Tripo’s free plan gives 200 credits a month, but those models are public and non-commercial. Meshy’s free plan gives 100 credits a month under a CC BY 4.0 licence.

Can ChatGPT make 3D models?

ChatGPT does not export a 3D model file such as GLB or STL. It can write code, such as a Blender Python script, that builds a simple shape, which suits basic geometric parts, not detailed organic models. For a mesh from a prompt or photo, use a dedicated generator such as Tripo or Meshy.

Which AI 3D generator is best for 3D printing?

Meshy is the best AI 3D generator for 3D printing, because it lists printability analysis and repair and multi-colour print export, and it has been tested for printing by 3Dnatives, 3DPrint.com and All3DP. Hi3D is All3DP’s pick for printable geometry but took about 25 minutes a generation in its test. Check any model for non-manifold edges, separate bodies and thin walls before printing.

Can AI turn a photo into a 3D model?

Yes. Tripo, Meshy, Hi3D, Tencent Hunyuan3D and Hyper3D Rodin all produce a textured mesh from a photo. Results are best with a single object on a plain background, and the hidden sides are guessed, so testers regularly find invented detail. Tencent Hunyuan3D accepts up to four views of the same object.

Are AI-generated 3D models good enough for games?

AI-generated 3D models are usable as props, background assets and prototypes, but raw output can run to millions of triangles, so most models need retopology first. Tripo’s low-poly and retopology models won their board in the September 2026 Top 3D AI season. Steam requires developers to disclose AI-generated content that ships in a game.

Can I sell AI-generated 3D models?

You can sell AI-generated 3D models when your plan’s licence allows commercial use. Tripo’s Pro plan and Meshy’s Pro plan include commercial rights, while Tripo’s free models are non-commercial and Meshy’s free models require credit under CC BY 4.0. In the US a purely AI-generated model may not be protected by copyright without human creative input.

Is Meshy better than Tripo?

Tripo led Meshy in the September 2026 Top 3D AI season: Tripo v3.1 scored 1,094 on textured models against 1,057 for Meshy 7.1, and 1,146 on geometry against 1,122 for Meshy 7. Meshy has more hands-on 3D printing tests and more user ratings. Both Pro plans cost $20 a month, with 3,000 credits on Tripo and 1,000 on Meshy.

Is Hunyuan3D free to use?

Yes. Tencent’s hosted Hunyuan3D gives 20 free generations a day. The Hunyuan3D 2.1 open weights are free to run, but the licence excludes the European Union, the United Kingdom and South Korea and requires a separate licence for products with more than 1 million monthly active users.

What is the difference between an AI 3D model generator and an AI image generator?

An AI 3D model generator outputs a mesh file you can rotate, edit, print or import into a game engine, while an AI image generator outputs a flat picture. Image generators are useful in a 3D workflow for making the clean reference image that a 3D generator then converts.

How to choose

  1. For general use, start with Tripo. It won every board of the completed blind-vote season and gives the most credits for $20.
  2. If you are printing, use Meshy for its repair and multi-colour tools, or Hi3D if solid geometry matters more than speed.
  3. If you want to pay nothing, use Tencent Hunyuan3D at 20 generations a day.
  4. If you want detailed textured models, try Hyper3D Rodin.
  5. Whatever you pick, check the licence on the plan you generate on and inspect every mesh before you print it, sell it or ship it in a game.
