GPT-6 goes to every ChatGPT user, Claude Haiku 90% cheaper

OpenAI's GPT-6 rollout and its safety report, Anthropic's Claude Haiku 5.5, a teen-safety rating for ChatGPT, Samsung's record quarter, and Finland pausing Google's data centres.

GPT-6 is coming to every ChatGPT user, free tier included Paid plans got it on Wednesday and Free and Go follow on Thursday, with GPT-6 Sol on paid tiers and the smaller Luna on free. ChatGPT can now answer with charts, buttons, forms and little tools like a bill splitter instead of just text. On questions that need a web search, it starts answering 44 per cent sooner than GPT-5.6. Source

Anthropic’s Claude Haiku 5.5 is up to 90 per cent cheaper It went live on Wednesday at $0.10 per million tokens in and $0.50 out for most prompts, against $1 and $5 for Haiku 4.5. Anthropic’s published results have it ahead of OpenAI’s GPT-6 Luna on every test both models took. Max subscribers also start getting $100 or $200 a month of API credit this week. Source

Common Sense Media rates ChatGPT for Teens an “unacceptable risk” Its report, out on Wednesday, found ChatGPT kept teens talking even in crisis scenarios, and across nearly 2,000 prompts its testers saw just two reminders to take a break. OpenAI disputes the testing, saying most of it may have happened before parental controls were fully switched on. The same day, OpenAI put out its own numbers saying teens average under 15 minutes a day. Source

OpenAI’s own safety report says GPT-6 does worse on self-harm tests The report for the new ChatGPT models, out on Wednesday, shows both getting worse on self-harm, and in its under-18 tests on sexual content and emotional reliance too. OpenAI says the failures it reviewed were borderline and lower severity, and that the emotional-reliance result was partly down to an over-sensitive test. Source

Samsung made about $80bn profit in one quarter, on AI memory That’s 107.4 trillion won of operating profit for July to September, nearly nine times a year ago, in early figures out on Thursday. Memory chip prices are behind it, and TrendForce expects DRAM to go up another 10 to 15 per cent this quarter. Source

Finland told Google to pause work at two data centre sites On Tuesday its permit agency said the forest clearing at Muhos and Kajaani went ahead before environmental reviews were done, and asked for the work to stop by 23 October. Google says the felling followed Finland’s forestry law, but admits it fell short of its own standards and will follow the agency’s guidance. Source
